THE LISTENING ROOM

A good ear takes practice.

Listen to a hidden tone, remember it, then adjust the frequency to recreate it. Each round is worth up to 10 points. Expert has ten rounds; Easy and Hard have five.

  1. Listen. Easy plays for 2.5 seconds; Hard for 1.25 seconds; Expert for 0.8 seconds. Choose an instrument sound or a new random instrument each round.
  2. Recreate. Drag the frequency slider, press and drag left/right on the wave, or enter Hz. You can also choose My microphone and sing the note after the target stops. Preview as often as you like.
  3. Compare. Lock in your guess to reveal both frequencies and their note names.
Every frequency has a nearest note.

The big note is your selection, not the hidden answer. Cents show how far it is from that note: 100 cents = one semitone. Snap to notes selects exact equal-tempered pitches.

Arrow keys fine-tune by 1 cent (Shift: 10). Space previews. Enter submits. Scoring drops linearly from 10 at a perfect match to 0 at 600 cents away. Optional instrument identification contributes two of the ten round points. Free tuning is unscored. Try matching recordings or compare community attempts in Rankings. Use Analysis for live input, recordings and vocal range. Never force your voice to reach a target.
